I have been a huge fan of Danielle Flanders for years..... ever since I first met her
when we were on the Create My Keepsake DT together way back in 2009.
She has just such a fabulous style.... which she makes look so effortless.
Well, this week, for Papertrey Ink's Make It Monday #143, she is showcasing her Modern Whimsy Style and I just had to play along.
However, I found to be a little harder than I thought it would be.
Here's my attempt...
I decided to go with the fact that Modern Whimsy Style involves lots of layers
and layered some PTI Sweet Blush and Aqua Mist cardstock with some SSS woodgrain cardstock.
(A tip: this was the piece of cardstock that I had left over from diecutting my hello from.
Rather than toss it out, I used it as a layer.)
I diecut my banners (from PTI's vellum & a piece of My Mind's Eye patterned paper) with my Get a Handle on it Banner die. These I folded over the top of my card and stitched in place.
The two rows of stitching felt more whimsical to me, no?
Then, I stamped my sentiment (from Wonderful Words: Hello) with Enchanted Evening ink
and added my diecut "hello" (a Simon Says Stamp die.)
What do you think? Did I achieve the Modern Whimsy Style?
Thanks for looking!
This is gorgeous Leigh. I love three two rows of stitching and your big hello die cut.
ReplyDeleteI totally think your designs are always in the neighborhood of "modern whimsy" ... lots of patterns and layers, but in a light way. This one definitely fits the bill! Love it, Leigh. Hope you're doing well : )
ReplyDeleteFantastic card,Leigh!! Love the little stitching and the vellum!!
ReplyDeleteLove this, Leigh! Perfectly whimsical!
ReplyDeleteAs a former teacher, I'm assessing your 'attempt' at Modern Whimsy as a resounding success; it's fabulous!! The big hello - so eye-catching! A+++++++

This made me gasp! I adore this card! WOW!!!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE! That big huge hello is so Awesome on your card :)
ReplyDeleteWel Leigh, I for one LOVE your card!!!!! I'm sorry for neglecting your blog, I've missed seeing your cards :-) I'm done with my coarse and will have more time to visit!! I've missed alot and love your style!!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful card with such pretty papers, Leigh! I just love (and want :) that 'hello' die!
ReplyDeleteThis card is beautiful! I think you pulled off the modern whimsy style perfectly!
ReplyDeleteI think your attempt is fabulous!! The papers and banners are a great mix with your large sentiment.
ReplyDeleteVery whimsical and lovely!
ReplyDeleteok first I need to enter this challenge too, I got to take a crack at modern whimsy. Second, I love your work and although its modern, its still structured, so I would grade you a 90%, because the colors and vellum are whimsy and modern, and I LOVE the whole layout because its orderly, which makes me happy but not as whimsy and whimsy should be. make sense??
ReplyDeleteSuper job with the Modern Wimsey style. I must admit that I have been too scared to try, so I just tell myself I am too busy.
ReplyDeleteLeigh, I`m in love now with that `hello´ die cut thanks to your card. Lovely! And I like the sewing you did (I`m always too lazy to sew as my sewing machine isn`t in my crafting room). Gotta find a solution for this I guess so I might be able to create cards like you do in the near future :-)
ReplyDeleteI have to admit to flipping right by Make It Monday because I knew that there was no way at all that I would ever be able to replicate Danielle's work even with instruction!!!! But YOU have done well. It's so fresh and that bold "hello" looks wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI love that even though it's a take on someone else's style (which I think you did SUPER well), I can still tell it's a Leigh card. You have your own signature style and it's just perfect!
ReplyDeleteGreat job I hear you on more layers
ReplyDeleteThis is so pretty Leigh! Great take on the challenge.
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! Love the textured hello and the stitching!
ReplyDeleteVery soft and pretty!
