Wings

I decided to participate in this month's Crate Paper Creative Weekly Challenge: Wings.

When I first saw the challenge, I decided to create a layout using some Storyteller patterned paper and chipboard. I chose a photo from my trip to the DR Congo last fall and started making my layout with the intentions of adding some diecut butterflies...

Except, then I noticed that sweet chipboard airplane and thought how perfectly it suited my layout. And it still had wings, right?

I diecut a tag using PTI's tag sale #7 die. Look, it even says Africa on it! Perfect, right? I stamped on my cardstock background using a stamp from my new PTI Birthday Style set. I love how it has the look of drops of mist/ink, but this way I can totally control the placement.

I used the chipboard word from the Storyteller collection and added some American Crafts letter stickers to spell out "return."

I used a tag and added some yellow baker's twine and the chipboard elements.

I tucked my journaling behind my photo using another Crate Paper tag and some cardstock.

After completing my layout, I went to check the Crate Paper blog for the challenge details to see if my airplane would be acceptable.... and it isn't. So, instead, I decided to create a challenge for this month's Pages With Papertrey, which is a recipe challenge: create a layout using 3 tags, one stamp and twine.

So, still wanting to participate in the Crate Paper challenge, I decided to make an Easter card using the Storyteller collection and include a butterfly this time. I stamped my sentiment using PTI's Happy Day stamp set.

I diecut two patterned paper butterflies using PTI's Beautiful Butterflies die collection, cut one of them in half and stitched them together with a zig zag stitch. A new leaf button finishes it off.

And determined to make a layout for the challenge, I chose a favourite photo of Sage and created this layout, once again using some Storyteller patterned paper, along with a few tags from the Pretty Party collection (there's also some Acorn Avenue patterned paper in there, too.)

So, the tags were all cut from Crate Paper patterned paper (I really love their tag sheets!) On the second tag, I diecut the butterfly originally for my Easter card that I shared above and then liked the look of the negative diecut and decided to use it on my layout. I took the other half of that butterfly diecut and added it to the polka dotted butterfly diecut using the same technique as my Easter card. This was placed over a 1 3/4" circle that I used to cover up the large "3" on the tag. A PTI button finishes it off.

On these tags I used some PTI Love Lives Here butterfly diecuts topped with buttons. The second tag uses the negative from the butterfly in the photo above, along with a strip of patterned paper which covered up the pocket watch that was on the tag.

I wanted to create some layered butterflies using my PTI Beautiful Butterflies dies, but wanted one larger than the largest one. So I took the die, flipped it over and traced it onto the herringbone patterned paper and cut it out by hand. I layered them and stitched them together and added an Echo Park decorative brad. The sentiment stamped underneath is Mama Elephant, from the Smitten stamp set.

To create my title, I diecut my letters using my PTI Headline Alphabet dies from sweet blush cardstock. Then I stamped on each one using the coordinating stamp set and terracotta tile ink. I was pleased at how well this matched the herringbone patterned paper.

Thanks for looking!

Leigh, I love everything!!!!!

Your first layout is simply fabulous with the "misting" and chipboard accents. What a great idea to create a challenge from your layout for PWP!

Your Easter card with the layered chipboard and butterfly is beautiful!

And your layout with Sage is filled with die cut goodness. I love all of the negatives and positives and layering. Simply gorgeous!

What a bummer you couldn't use your first layout! Loved reading more about your trip. And yes, I do feel a twinge of regret not getting the Headliners alpha stamps. I thought I could get away with just getting the dies, but I do love the look of that thin line down the middle on yours. Great layouts!

Love these...especially the little airplane on your layout. It's my favorite interpretation of "wings". I'm always so inspired by you (and I don't just mean your paper crafts).
